Silver SILVER PROTECTION OF THE ACHIROPITA
The silver protection was used to hold seven glasses to protect the image of the Achiropita in the Cathedral in 1640 by Mons. Pietro Spinelli . The protection in chiseled silver was meant to glorify the sacred image, we can see to praying angels , while on the upper part we can see two cherubs holding an imperial crown.
The opening, that allowed the view of the sacred image, is enriched by precious and colourful stones. According to the art historian Giorgio Leone, the silver protection could be attributed to the Neapolitan silversmith Orazio Scoppa, while the crown , replaced in the XIX c is the work of the silversmith Luigi Abbate
